After Anil Kapoor re-created 24, there is a slight possibility of another American TV series to be remade in India. Read on…
The queen of Indian television Ekta Kapoor seems to be expanding her horizon. After launching the extravagant mythical drama Naagin, she seems to have her eyes set on bringing a American series to Indian television. And the series is none other than the scandalous Kerry Washington starrer Shonda Rhimes' Scandal.
Okay, before you get too excited, let use clear that this was just an informal expression of Ekta's desire to remake the series. While talking to a news portal Ekta said "I would love to adapt 'Scandal' where the actress falls in love with the President. We also have a single Prime Minister. So, I think that would be a superb thing to do." But she also crushed the excitement by further adding "I don't think it is happening in the future yet but that is something I would love to do one day".
Shonda Rhimes is the queen of American television. She has few of the top rating series credited to her name as writer and producer; Scandal, Grey's Anatomy and the recent How To Get Away With Murder. It will be path breaking to see these two ladies team up and bring an enigmatic series to Indian television.
A few western stories have already been adapted on Indian television, the most recent being Anil Kapoor's 24. Balaji Telefilms' creative director feels such series can achieve success only if they are Indianised. "I think a story needs to be solid whether it is Indian or Western, adapted or not and the story-telling should be amazing. Honestly, stories from the West or South-Asia or any part of the world will get adaptation only if they are told with conviction and given a local flavour. And this will be the strength of the producer and content-maker." Ekta said.
Further talking about her new series Naagin, Ekta said "I think this concept of Naagin, this folklore is what our culture has given birth to. This is probably our legacy as far as folklore is concerned. The idea was to capture it. We wanted to upgrade the visuals but keep the story rooted"
"It is a weekend show, it can't be boring and cannot go on and on… It has to be interesting. It is a complete hardcore, masaledaar show. I feel it is good to tell the story in limited time so that the audience remembers your work." Ekta added.
We already have our fingers crossed for Ekta's wish to remake Scandal come true. It may end up being the hottest TV show ever on Indian screen. What do you think about it? Tell us in comments below.
