Mumbai, November 2025: The debate surrounding the film "Haq," inspired by the Shah Bano case, has now taken a political turn. Amid initial screenings and online discussions, Congress MP Imran Masood criticized the film, calling it a "divisive agenda."
Imran Masood said, "The film Haq's agenda of spreading hatred will not succeed." He also clarified that he would not go to see the film, as he believes the purpose of such films is "to incite tension, not to promote understanding."
On the other hand, shortly after his statement, several BJP leaders praised the film, calling it "an effort forward towards truth, gender justice, and constitutional values." They said the film brings to light a chapter of Shah Bano's fight that has long been suppressed by politics.
This sharp contrast in political reactions is further fueling the debate surrounding the film. While supporters hail it as a bold retelling and a voice for women's rights, critics criticize it as a misrepresentation and an attempt at polarization.
Meanwhile, "Haq" has become not just a film but the center of a larger national debate on religion, justice, and constitutional rights.
The film, starring Yami Gautam, Emraan Hashmi, and Sheeba Chaddha, released on November 7th.
